This exhibition pavilion for the FOR-SITE Foundation organizes reclaimed shipping containers around a central skylit atrium using distinctive three-fold rotational symmetry. As a temporary structure on display in the Presidio, the building is designed to be easily transported and able to function off grid, yet contains a refined gallery interior for viewing art.

L+U designed a lighting strategy that shifts from 100% daylighted to electrically lit at night and maintains a subtle and architecturally integrated luminous environment. Light levels were studied to support views extending out the ends of each container and as well as within the skylit atrium and gallery walls. The seamless transition between daylight and electric light not only creates a beautiful aesthetic experience; it also reduces the battery size needed to store solar energy for electric lighting at night.
